The crash was less than 24 hours ago, and the fact-finding part of the investigation is far from over. It will be a while before investigators begin forming theories, let alone conclusions from those facts. Those may not come for weeks, or more likely, months. Any speculation on he “how” of the event is just that, speculation.

1/2 of the speculation is solved; speed is pretty much what caused it to crash and go off the rails. The other half is figuring out what caused the train to be going 100+ mph into a turn meant for 50 mph. Lazy/sleeping operator? Miscommunications? Sabotage?

Simple: The engineer just wasn’t trained properly.

Some might see this comment as “too soon”, but here’s my thoughts.

Obviously we know the train was traveling too fast the curve it was on. I’m thinking, had the train be outfitting with Bilstein Suspension that it may have held the corner. Although, given what happened i’m gonna go out on a limb here are say the train was likely outfitting with shitty Raceland suspension parts.

With all of the hullabaloo about self driving cars, it seems like a self driving train could have been done 10+ years ago.

May have been too chilly out for Hoosier slicks to have any traction.

The news cycle demands it; that the story shows up in a blaze, has time get the man on the street’s opinion of what happened because that is totally valid, toss in some politics as there elections coming up and get a wrapped up conclusion within two days to make room for the next story. How could that cause any issues with accomplishing a proper investigation where we may learn something?

On a related note I was/am pretty appalled how information has come out in the Germanwings investigation. Seemed like lots of premature release. I’m not as up on how EASA handles investigations, and the release of info pertaining to those investigations, but this seems like a shit show. Almost said train wreck, but...you know.

The French treat all aviation accidents as criminal investigations, for reasons most of the rest of the world doesn’t understand. I think the BEA would like to keep the local prosecutor away from the investigation, but they can’t.

So that is their reasoning for releasing sketchy details and speculation at the drop of a hat? Good plan.

Not their reasoning, but prosecutors love to leak information; makes it look like they are Champions of Justice.

What For Sweden said, and also the fact that news channel (and the French one especially), are looking for the slightest hint of news, even if they are putting the investigation or someone’s life at risk. Lool up what happened with BFMTV during the Charlie Hebdo attack back in January.

And now the Philadelphia mayor is publicly calling the train’s engineer a criminal. That engineer won’t say anything to investigators now.

I think it’s the universe’s secret ploy to keep me from visiting Jalopnik HQ and putting Puff’s butt on stuff.

First trip = farted around too much too far north. No time left to swing by. Can’t.

Second trip = it’s still snow season, and we’ve got one snow-able (read: salt-able) car. Amtrak from close to where the boyfriend works was stupid ‘spensive, and I was in full Cheap Fartknocker mode. Nope.

Third trip = YAY NO SNOW! Also, it was my day off with nothing planned. Train wrecks on the route the day before. NOPE AGAIN. I made it to Philadelphia when I found out that the earliest bus with space still open would get into NYC around 5. Hahahahahaha (nope).

I took Puff’s picture with the Liberty Bell and ate crabcakes instead. Puffalumpin’.
